Gosh... the tirades of hatred I had to go through for years because I DARED to own pets despite me and my family living in poverty. No-one acknowledged that the pets were well groomed and healthy, that they ate better quality food than I did... No, all the time I was scolded and shamed for being irresponsible and even accused of abusing my pets!
What people never grasped was that the pets were and are NOT luxury items, but hobby, therapy, vacation and company for me. Taking care of them made me feel better, their company helped me pull myself out of my deepest depression and made up for missing out on a lot of social activities I just couldn't partake in because I could simply not afford them.

Long story short: stop judging, because chances are high you don't know shit about how and why poor people obtained "luxury".
